Green River -August 31, 2010
Report by Steve Schmidt
Weather wrecked havoc on the Green these past few days, but we are back up an running not that it has dried out. Fishing continues to be fantastic and we don't expect that to change unless we get into some type of abnormal weather pattern. Typically September days are just about perfect for the Green River.
Most hatches are done except for evening caddis. Terrestrial fishing is what is most consistent and will be through September: ants, beetles and hoppers. River conditions are ideal, the river corridor is absolutely spectacular, kids are back in school, yahoo!
Flows
Red Creek blew big time earlier in the week. It's going to probably take through the weekend to clear up. That said, those waters between the dam Red Creek continue to fish very, very well: big hoppers, ants and beetles. This is probably the best time of year to take some of the Green Rivers larger trout on a dry. It doesn't get much better given the weather and the fishing. Our Green River Guides are loving it!
Flows are quite good right now. During the peak part of the day, the river is stable with little or no fluctuation. We have yet to hear anything from the Bureau on changes for the fall, so expect to enjoy these flows for a while longer. Although the river bumbs aroudn during a 24hr period, for most of the day it holds around 1800-2000 ft3/s. Really a nice level and one of the reason the fish are in such good shape and the terrestrial fishing is so good.

What to Expect: Very good and consistent fishing for the most part; wade fishing or floating the river; dry flies, nymphs and streamers. Soft hackles in the riffle water has also been rather productive. Terrestrial patterns producing the best and taking some nice fish. The past years higher flows have benefited the rivers trout; browns, rainbows and hybrids are all nice fat and plump.
The excellent dry fly fishing the we are accustom to on the Green continues. Love August and September due to their consistency. As the recreational traffic tappers off with school now in session, the dry fly fishing should hold if not get better. Weekends will still be crowded, especially when we have such nice weather as we are currently experiencing. Those that stay out late will be rewarded with good caddis fishing on the lower sections of the river. The riffle water is where you will most likely find the best caddis hatches. There are also some small Psuedocleons out: these look like tiny PMD's, #20-#22. Fish are yet to get on these small flies, but they will over the next few months.
Having fished many waters in the west and the world, I feel the Green is one of the most consistent fisheries in the world. Definitly one of the most beautiful not only in the river corridor but the surrounding countryside. That doesn't mean you can't have a poor day, and there were definitely some in the early part of the year, but on average the Green River fishes pretty dam good. As we head into September, expect to find the Green River corridor as one of the most b beautiful waters to fish in the west, weekdays in particular.
Streamer fishing, especially from a boat also continues to be productive, but with noses finally up it's a challenge switching to the heavy artillerary. Same goes for nymph fishing. Our guides prefer to fish dry flies, and given the start to the year, they'll be happy if these don't have to manage any nymph rigs for the remainder of the year.
