Sage's new rod series is a game changer. The ONE is arguably one of the easiest casting fly rods that I have ever thrown, while maintaining an amazing amount of power, lightness, and feel in a powerhouse of a blank. In layman's terms: It is all that and a bag of potato chips. For experienced and inexperienced anglers, this rod will make your fishing all the more enjoyable. I was so tickled with this new rod series, that it literally only took a handful of casts to convince me that the 9 foot five weight ONE rod was the next rod destined for my quiver. For any of you who have talked to me about how I select a rod, and how meticulous I am about what I fish-this spontaneous decision was a surprise.

I was even more surprised, and thrilled when I experienced how easy this rod was able to maintain and hold a tight loop with 70+ feet of fly line without the aid of double-hauling. In the hands of a caster good enough, or one willing/wanting to improve, it really will take your fishing to a level that many have not experienced: Effortless. Having had one to play with at the shop, while anxiously awaiting the arrival of mine, I have been experimenting with some fly lines, and figuring out which ones will make this rod tick. Here is a brief synopsis of what I have discovered out on the pond:

Rio WF LT: This line is a dynamic match on this rod. It most likely won't handle heavy nymph rigs, or large dry-droppers very efficiently for those who struggle with their casting, but in the hands of a decent caster, or one fishing smaller flies, this line is awesome. This particular taper has become a shop favorite for every action of fly-rod, and it has shown itself worthy of this rod as well.

Rio Gold: Another clear-cut choice for this rod series. Heavy enough to make this rod handle larger flies and nymph rigs, while having the ability to present flies delicately when needed. Loaded the ONE rod very nicely at a variety of ranges and my personal recommendation for casters of all abilities.

Rio Grand/Scientific Anglers GPX: These lines are for the guy/gal who wants to really feel the rod load, has a slower casting stroke, or struggles feeling the rod load. The 905-4 ONE handled these lines very well and are just another series of lines that will work on this versatile series of rods.

Hopefully these musings of mine will aid you in your decisions, and I hope that regardless of you buying a new ONE rod, you should still cast one. It is the future of rod design, and I am excited for what this means for my own fishing down the road. I am craving my ONE rod as I type this review....

Rio LT

Chris Z - 04/25/2012

Let me add to my review that the Rio LT is spot on and great on this rod for medium to long casts.

Six Weight One

Ausable - 03/13/2012

Love a six weight for pinpoint control on big rivers like my homewaters the Delaware System in NY. This rod puts a dry at 60 ft on a dime. It is so light feels like a five but has so much power and throws laser loops.
