Not far from Salt Lake City just across the Wyoming border lies the Bear River; a meandering meadow stream that runs in the shadows of the Unita Mountains. It’s a river born high in Utah’s mountains flowing uninterrupted into Wyoming. Shortly after doing so it passes through the Kingfisher Bend Ranch. For two and a half miles this meandering section of private water is home to brown and cutthroat trout with an occasional rainbow. It’s an ideal setting for a quite day or two on the water undisturbed by others; a quality in fly-fishing that is getting hard to experience.
Kingfisher Bend Ranch offers you many convenient options if you are looking for waters where you will enjoy a day of fly-fishing in solitude. Given the ranches close proximity to Salt Lake City it’s an easy drive to the ranch; about an hour and a half. Since you and and those you may choose to fly-fish will be the only flyfishers on these waters there really isn’t much urgency in getting there. If you’d like to spend the evening, there are several nice cabins that sit juxtaposed to the ranches acre and a half pond were you can kick back, relax after a good day on the water, enjoy a cool beverage on the porch, and watch the world go by. Life doesn’t get much better!
The river itself is easy to wade and to navigate. Its shallow gradient makes for many beautiful riffles and long flat glassy pools that beg for a well presented dry fly. On days when hatches of mayflies, stoneflies or caddis emerge you will find trout rising to take the rivers offerings. In the heat of summer as the grasses dry and terrestrials become important to these piscatorial residents you’ll be able to lure some of the Bear Rivers larger trout out of hiding to take a hopper, beetle or ant. These fish don’t see much traffic since the ranch only allows 4 rods on the water at a time. Unlike our more pressured waters closer to Salt Lake City these trout are quite willing to take a fly; just one of the advantages to fishing private water.
We are very fortunate to have partnered with the Kingfisher Bend Ranch and to have the opportunity to share this beautiful river with our clients. In the 25 years that we have been in business we haven’t found another property that offers the quality of fishing this beautiful property does. It’s scenic setting and generous waters give us the chance to show those in search of a more intimate fly-fishing experience something unique for our area, especially given its close proximity to Park City and Salt Lake City.
