Women's Fly-Fishing Class:
Our 2012 Women's Fly-fishing class was a lot of fun and great educational experience for all who attended. Our long time friend Molly Semenik will again be teaching this fun and informative two day class in April of 2013. For those not familiar with Molly, we first met her in the early days of Western Rivers Flyfisher with her father fly fishing Utah waters. Over the years she became a good friend of the shops; we fished together often and shared in a number of conservation projects. When she moved to Montana about a decade ago, we were sorry to see her go.
Molly has taken those early days and passion for fly-fishing and become one of only a handful of women who are licensed Montana fly-fishing guides, and a very sought after casting instructor. As a guide she specializes in teaching- an approach that we also adhere to at Western Rivers. When she's not guiding, her knowledge and qualifications find her traveling around the country and world now teaching and doing what she loves, fishing with flies. She is also one of only a few women FFF Certified Master Casting Instructors. We are very excited to have her back, and a part of our Western Rivers Flyfisher educational series.
This class was geared for those wanting to get started into fly-fishing, at least that is what we thought. But over the years, we found that women who have been fishing with a fly rod for sometime enjoy and learn just as much from this class. It's a two day class that will begin at Western Rivers. Here you'll go over some of the basic information about the sport of fly-fishing, and what gear and information you need to be successful right away. For those of you who have never taken a class or been with a guide, I'm sure you'll pick up some valuable tid bits that will help you get more out of your days on the water. After lunch, you'll go to Liberty Park and work on your casting. Our own FFF Certified casting instructor, Nick Teynor will join Molly so that everyone will get the necessary assistence with their casting, regardless of your abilities. He will also join her for the Saturday session.
Saturday is a field trip to the river. Here you'll learn first hand about the insects that live in the river, selecting fly-patterns to imitate them, presentations, reading water, and see first hand the techniques used in fly-fishing to be successful. The best advice we can offer for this part of the class is to take your time, and have fun! You'll find that learning how to fly-fish is like learning how run: You start crawling, then walking, and finally running. Before it's all said and done, you'll be turned loose to put the new skills you've learned to use.
