| Trout Unlimited in Utah |
 |
|
Trout Unlimited has been vastly involved in numerous
issues here in Utah. As a grass-roots
organization, we become involved in issues at the level of most concern; the angler and the
resource. The mission of Trout Unlimited is "To conserve, protect and restore North
America's cold-water fisheries and their watersheds."
|
There are currently seven chapters of TU in Utah. These are:
- The Stonefly Society, Salt Lake City
- High Country Fly Fishers, Park City
- Cache Anglers, Logan
- Green River Anglers, Vernal
- Color Country Anglers, Cedar City
- Weber Basin Anglers, Ogden
- Canyonlands, Price
|
| Each chapter is an independent organization of TU. The Utah Council of Trout Unlimited
acts as a coordinating body between the various chapters and leads in the advocacy role on
issues concerning habitat protection and enhancement, angling rules, angler access, and
legislative issues. The Utah Council also acts as a watchdog over the Utah Division of Wildlife
Resources (UDWR) on issues relating to cold-water fisheries. The Utah Council is a signatory
to working agreements with the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service, and the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service. |
| Each chapter of TU in Utah has primary watchdog responsibility for numerous rivers, streams,
lakes and reservoirs in their general area. When issues concerning areas that may overlap
more than one chapter's "area of responsibility" arise, the power of all concerned chapters can
be brought to bear on the issue. This has been the case with East Canyon Creek, Fish Creek
Price River, and the Provo River. There is strength in numbers. |
| The future of Trout Unlimited in Utah is bright. The Council's involvement in the 2002 Olympics
has reached national notoriety and acclaim, winning praises from Trout Unlimited National and the
Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. The Council has been very active in
the Central Utah Completion Project mitigation efforts, as have the Stonefly and High Country
chapters. |
| The Utah Council is taking a proactive stance on development and mitigation in the Snyderville
and Park City area on the effect these developments will have on East Canyon Reservoir. This may
become a standard, which all future impacts to streams and rivers will be decided. |
| Since there are many areas that need the watchdog presence of Trout Unlimited, we expect to see
new chapters form in the years to come. This could include areas like Panguitch, St. George, Richfield,
and even Moab. Currently there are over 1,200 members of TU Utah. These are anglers concerned about
the future of angling for cold-water species and protection and restoration of riparian and aquatic
habitats. |
| We welcome any and all persons that are interested in conserving, protecting and restoring our
cold-water fisheries and their watersheds. Contact your local chapter or TU National and find out when they
will be having their next meeting. You can find out more about TU at
www.tu.org. Look it up. |
